heheheh... good line and besides that it's actually an interesting article on press releases and the media and "spin" in both. It would actually be interesting to extend the concept (press releases about bad things are relentlessly positive, in the assumption that the media (intermediary) will see the truth amongst the bullshit but then take a positive quote to lighten the otherwise negative news.) to something like US politics and whether or not there has been a failure of this system or any of the players in it.

IBM's 500GHz processor? Not so fast...

So there's this article over at Ars Techinica that makes sense of all the coverage of the "new 500Ghz IBM chip ZOMG!" basically the deal is that this type of transistor (not a chip infact) is used to broadcast & receive the radio frequency (yes these are analog circuits) thus this higher frequency will just make it possible to use new portions of the spectrum (Like a radio with a bigger dial), rather than having any impact on processing speeds at all.

Thank You Ars Technica! too bad explanation this will never appear in any mainstream news source and even if it did how would you write a headline for it that people would actually read?

oh just incase you missed it here's the original Georgia Tech press release. The tech press then sort of ran with it and at least one article that I read was saying that we should expect to see this technology in our desktop computers in 12-18 months becasue it uses conventional silicon manufacturing techniques. It does and we could see it soon but damned if I know why I'd want one in my desktop .

Just an update

For no particularly good reason.

Big moving day is Saturday, which of course means that the whole we is also the big moving day. Particularly because of all the renovations that are going on in the house... not to mention all the guests that are here or going to be through here soon. really it's just alot of work.

Tonight is a night off however, going out for tapas & drinks. MMmmm will be good. Of course than means that there will be more left to do tomorrow and friday night... One really cannot win eh?

GlobalGiving

GlobalGiving is a similar site to Kiva but rather than microfinance loans it deals with more traditional charity work (including the tax implications). What makes it interesting is that you can select the specific project that you want to give to.

Very cool.

Kiva

Kiva is a very cool site/charity/thing that you should get involved with.

Basically you donate $25, which goes towards a microloan for a small business-owner in a developing country. Once the loan is paid back, then you can withdraw your $25 or loan it out to someone else. The interest collected on the loan goes towards covering the overhead of the organization administering the loan.

Awesome.
